Background

During the last semester of my senior year, I joined a project with Fermi Energy Inc. through the New York New Energy Student Startup Experience.

During my time with Fermi Energy Inc. I met with the co-Founder to discuss what do we want the website to look like and how we can attract sponsors.

Initial Challenge

The biggest obstacle I faced during this project was that I had no idea what were cathodes and how exactly to market them to their key demographics. To tackle this challenge, I had a meeting with the co-founder where we discussed expectations. During our first meeting, I learned:

  • The company had a specific style in mind to match industry standards

  • I will not be inputting the text due to NDA requirements so the co-Founder will take over this part.

Research

Competitive Analysis

To help guide me figure out how to design for Fermi’s target demographic, I scheduled a meeting with the co-founder. After our session, I was tasked with assessing the strengths of their direct competitors: Wildcat Discovery Technologies and Sila.

Define and Ideate

Prioritization

After collecting my data from my competitive analysis and reviewing my notes with the co-Founder I was able to define my user goals:

Display Products

It would be imperative that Fermi’s products would be on front display and a section going in-depth on the quality of their products.

Career Opportunities

There would need to be a section specifically dedicated to exhibiting the company’s career options geared toward full-time and internship opportunities.

Solution

Low-Fidelity Prototype

Once I gathered my data and figured out what aspects to prioritize, I moved on to sketching and building out my low-fidelity wireframes.

High-Fidelity Prototype

After showing the founders my low-fidelity wireframe, they were pleased with the design and the only revision needed was removing the testimonial section from the career page.

Reflections

1. If provided the time I would’ve conducted a moderated usability testing session during my wireframing with one of the co-Founders and a representative from the New York New Energy Student Startup Experience.

2. I would have integrated basic SEO best practices during the design phase, including optimizing content for search engines, ensuring mobile-friendliness, and improving site speed.
